Aja (Long A, sha (short a) like the continent Asia) Currey is a native New Mexican woman with three young children living in rural Las Vegas, NM. She has been in education for 13 years and has served a variety of roles, beginning as a special education teacher, moving into a dual teacher/special education coordinator role, then as assistant principal, and now principal. She is passionate about bringing community and real-world learning to her students and works to bring equity into every factor of the school building. Aja has extensive experience as a teacher leader, working with organizations including TeachPlus and the NMPED Teacher Leader and Teacher Ambassador programs. As a TeachPlus fellow, she has served as a state policy fellow, state policy fellow alumni, and National Policy fellow. She continues to serve as an administrator partner for the new TeachPlus state teacher policy fellows. Aja feels that teacher voice and leadership is key to promoting high quality educations for our students and strives to always make things better for each and every student in the community.
