PowerHours - Social Emotional Culture Development

Session Title: Social Emotional Culture Development
Facilitator: Jessica Nauiokas, Executive Director, Mott Haven Academy
Session Description: Haven Academy is a nationally recognized PreK-8th grade school specifically designed for children in foster care and the child welfare system. We use a combination of leading social-emotional learning curricula to help children – many of whom are survivors of trauma, abuse, or neglect – regulate their emotions and do their best learning. Our pioneering school model has led to Haven Students consistently outperforming comparison groups on state math and ELA tests, with Haven students in foster care being more than twice as likely to be proficient in math and ELA than children in foster care statewide.
In this session, we will define terms and introduce key Haven Social Emotional Program Anchors, while sharing out a few ideas on things to try right away. Key anchors discussed include:
-Logical consequences
-Responsive classroom routines
-Love and Logic techniques
-Morning Meet and Advisory Structures
-School Wide Positive Behavior Support
-Emotional Regulation Techniques
-Restorative Practices Continuum
Target Audience: School and System Leaders, Instructional Leads, Dean of Students, Behavioral Specialist, and School Social Workers
