Alumni Giving Spotlight

Earl Turner III, Ed. D is a 2014 Los Angeles alum who co-founded Apple Pi Education with his wife and Mathematics Professor Christina Eubanks-Turner, Ph.D. Apple Pi Education is a consulting company with a mission to empower learners and transform education through the power of mathematics. Their goal is to unlock the full potential of students from kindergarten through college by providing innovative and effective educational solutions.
Hear how Dr. Turner’s TFA experience led him to starting Apple Pi Education:
“During my corps experience as a math teacher, a student once asked me, “Mr. Turner, why don’t we ever solve these [critical thinking and enrichment] problems at the end of the lesson?” While there were numerous reasons beyond the students’ control that prevented me from challenging them, this question made me realize that my students really wanted more, and desired a greater opportunity to learn. Furthermore, I discovered that many of my students possessed the ability to handle the rigor of complex math problems. This realization compelled me to evaluate the factors within my control. Crucially, it was not that they were not learning how to solve challenging problems; rather, some of it was that they were not being pushed or given a chance to learn these types of problems because of me.”
Now, through Apple Pi Education, Dr. Turner and his team offer educator programs like professional development and early career math educator development opportunities (for 1st through 4th year educators). They also provide virtual and in-person student programming for their clients, such as MathYourMind. For more information, please visit their website, www.applepied.org!
